Year Reception Forest School; Summer 1 2014

Forest School - Summer Term 1 2013/2014
Reception – Mrs Newman’s Class

Session 1

In our first session we were given the chance to explore Forest School and to see how it had changed since we were last down there.  The grass was much longer and the trees and bushes were much thicker with leaves.  We also noticed that some trees had been planted and that the bug hotels that we had helped to build were finished.

As always there was plenty to do and lots of opportunities for us to use our imagination.

“Do you like our motorike?”

We enjoyed looking for minibeasts and had a good look to see if anything had made a home in our bug hotels.

We also had a look for minibeasts in other likely looking hiding places.  Some of us enjoyed potion making and investigating the mud pit.

We were all ready for our break, and enjoyed having our snack in base camp.  Mr Cutler asked us what equipment we would like to have for our next session.  We decided that we would like to take some pots and magnifiers to help us look at mini-beasts in more detail.

Session 2

The weather could not have been better for our second session.  Our activity was to look for and study the mini-beasts we found in Forest School.  Mr Cutler showed us how to use the magnifying glasses and sheets properly so that we could study the mini-beasts closely.  We also talked about where we might find mini-beasts, putting them back where we found them and how to handle them carefully.

Session 3

The weather this week was very different from last time; it was very wet and much colder!  We had asked Mr Cutler if he could bring some water to Forest School to make potions with.

We used the different containers to make potions and experimented with making them thicker, by adding more mud and other things we could find, and by making them more of a liquid by adding more water.

After a game of ‘1-2-3 where are you?’ we talked about what we had enjoyed most in our 3 sessions.
